I am not in Texas yet. So is it premature to call myself an "Unexpected Texan"? Perhaps. However, moving plans are quickly solidifying, apartment hunting has begun, moving services have been procured, and packing is well underway, so I am starting to become very very very excited about the adventure that awaits!
The current plan entails the following: packing up the truck on Friday, July 30th, shipping out of Sacramento on Saturday, July 31st, stopping for the evening in Los Angeles to visit my family and to (hopefully) pick up my awesome sister who might come along for the ride, then winding our way through the Southwest for two days, ultimately ending up in Austin, Texas on Monday evening, August 2nd.
By many measures, this three-day, 1762 mile trek is not particularly long (Katie drove all the way from Maryland to Sacramento just four years ago to attend law school in California!). Yet for me it represents by far the longest distance I have ever driven. (I think my previous record was a mere 375 mile trip from Los Angeles to San Francisco!) So, needless to say, I am still wrapping my head around the sheer amount of time we will be spending in the car.
On top of that, our car-trip adventure begins only two days after the conclusion of the California Bar Exam, which I am taking. Oh yes, the Bar Exam. That not-so-minor, stress-inducing right of passage that makes law students cry in anticipation and attorneys shudder at the memory is something that I get to experience merely hours before moving out of state. Good idea?
Luckily I am not in this adventure alone. The wonderful Katie will be swooping into town, making all the arrangements, packing up our stuff, and (most importantly) delivering me copious amounts of caffeine as I make my best attempt at conquering the California Bar Exam -- a three-day test of endurance and legal acumen (well mainly endurance).
Needless to say, my next 20 days will be spent just like my past 20+: studying, studying, studying. And I probably will have very little time to write for pleasure and frankly nothing interesting to write about (unless you want me to attempt to explain the Rule Against Perpetuities…). So enjoy the next few weeks without me and I look forward to writing again on July 30th!
